How to win in the Steel Curtain
A few years ago, I wrote about how to get your game on on in the toughest division in the NFL.
That’s exactly what happened, as I was the defensive coordinator for the Packers.
When I got to Green Bay, I had to learn a new defense from the guys who made the same mistakes last year.
I also had to adapt to the Packers’ scheme, and the way the Packers used man coverage to keep defenses honest.
I remember the day I was on the field, and how excited I was.
I’m sitting on the sideline in a green jersey, trying to keep my mind off the team’s offense and the defense’s tendencies.
I know we’re a young team, but I’m ready to play.
I knew I’d be in the best position to win a Super Bowl.
The only problem was, I was so excited.
I knew I had no chance to win that Super Bowl because the Green Bay Packers’ defense was so good last year, but it was fun to be part of the team.
I was really excited to be on the team and I had a lot of faith in our coaching staff.
I had to keep the excitement up and get ready for the game.
We had a great game plan in the spring, but we couldn’t have gone on a winning streak without being prepared for the most important game of the season.
So, I took my playbook to the field and I was nervous.
The first couple of drives we didn’t score.
But after the first half, I started seeing some good things.
I started getting more confident.
I noticed the defense was playing some solid football.
And I saw that the team was getting more aggressive.
I thought that was great.
We just kept going.
By halftime, we were in the red zone.
We were down by four.
We finally scored a touchdown.
Then, I got a call from a friend of mine.
He said, “Coach, you got to score a touchdown, because you need a win.”
I told him I was still going to try and win the game because I knew the Packers would win the championship.
So I got up and I went to the sideline.
I got my helmet on and I put it on and ran down the field.
And that’s when I knew we were going to win.
We got on the scoreboard and I saw it was going to be a very difficult game for us.
I don’t remember exactly what was going on, but at the end of the game, I said, [to the players], “I don’t think we were ready.”
We had to score some touchdowns to get the win.
So that’s the way it went.
I was happy because I got the chance to be in a position to play in the Super Bowl, and it was a great opportunity to be the defensive coach.
But I wasn’t happy because it wasn’t the right fit.
I had done some things wrong.
I have a lot more to learn.
So after that game, Coach [Bill] Parcells was like, “If we were to go to the Super, you guys have to get better.”
And I’m like, [laughs].
But we went on to win the Superbowl, and I think we have the right coach for that job.
