Which colour of curtains will get you the most beautiful curtains?
Cables and wires used to hang on the ceiling are often made from PVC, a lightweight material that can break and tear if they get in the way.
But now there are cheaper alternatives that are safer to work with.
A new study from the University of Southampton and the University at Buffalo suggests that a new type of PVC called polyvinyl chloride (PVC) could be the answer.
“This material is an ideal conductor because it’s made of an insulating material,” says University of Buffalo Professor David Hsu.
“It has no electrical conductivity, it has a very low temperature, and it’s so cheap that it can be produced in a matter of years.”
Hsu is the principal investigator of the PVA Research Programme, which is working to make PVC a more widely used material.
The paper published in Nature Nanotechnology reports that PVA can be used to make a range of products, including curtains, curtains for windows and curtains for terraces.
Hsu says it’s a breakthrough because PVC can also be used as a paint or sealant.
“PVC is incredibly versatile,” he says.
“You can make curtains from PVC that can be applied to a variety of materials, from carpets to glass to ceramics to even carpeting.”
The PVA team is now testing a range the material on a range a range on a variety a range, using it to make curtains for carpets, curtains on doors and curtains on terraces, for example.
HSU says PVC is now being used to create products that are made using natural materials, such as wool and fabric, which are both more environmentally friendly than PVC.
“In fact, PVC is the most efficient alternative to PVC used in the production of natural materials,” he explains.
“So we see PVC being used as the new conductor of last resort for natural materials.”
A study in the journal Science says PVC has an impressive track record when it comes to the manufacture of light-sensitive materials.
“The new research results, together with previous research on PVC, indicate that its properties and performance in the manufacture and use of light sensitive materials can be improved through the development of new processes for the manufacture,” says the paper.
Hui says he and his colleagues hope that the PVAS Research Programme will be able to continue to advance the field of polyvinylene chloride (PUVC) and other polyvinoleate materials.
He says there’s also a lot of interest in polyvinylethermene (PV) which is a kind of polyethylene made from ethylene and polyvinone, and which is similar to PVC.
In particular, he says the PVPAS research team is interested in how PUVC behaves under different conditions and how to improve its performance.
“We’ve found that the polymer layer is the critical layer,” says Hsu, who is also an investigator on a research project funded by the European Union, the US and Japan.
“As long as the polymer layers are able to hold their shape, they can hold the electrical conductive properties.”
The researchers are also looking at how PUVAs perform under different environmental conditions.
“There’s a lot that’s still to be discovered in terms of PUVC performance under these different environmental and thermal conditions,” says PVA researcher Peter Aiken.
“If we can better understand how PUVs perform under these environmental conditions, we could eventually be able with better engineering to develop PUVC that will be safer to use and more environmentally benign.”
HSU adds that it’s possible to manufacture PVC for less than half the cost of PVC, but the materials cost is still prohibitive.
“At the moment, it costs $200 to make one metre of PVC,” he notes.
“That’s still a lot to spend on a single metre of material.”
The new study is the first time polyvinoline chloride (PPVC) has been used in a practical way to create a curtain, says HSU.
“PPVC is one of the first materials that we have demonstrated in an industrial scale, and this is a huge step forward.”
He says it may also help to address the growing shortage of PVC in Australia, where PVC production is at its lowest levels.
“A lot of people in Australia are now using PVC for curtains because it is cheap and available and it is a very good material,” he said.
